Photography: about power and endurance

The building that is the high court of Australia is where the ultimate power of the law is dealt out. In front is a gum tree. Another symbol of strength. Click on image to enlarge

I was reminded of Harold Cazneaux’s photograph of 1937 – Spirit of Endurance – click here.

There was a lot of debate recently about the revamping of this area in front of the high court. The trees to the left are new having replaced some that were in bad condition.

While I am very happy to see the gum survive the design debates, it is a bit disappointing that the area surrounding it is still very boring. Lots of hard spaces and not much else, besides that lines of replacement trees. Surely a different design solution could have been proposed!
