Visiting Heidi October 2024

Heidi Museum of Modern Art

An overcast Friday in Melbourne and a good time to visit Heidi Museum of Modern Art.

Timing is important for a Heidi visit, as the cafe is very popular on any day no matter what the exhibition and the so their car parks are often full.

Few of those cafe customers enter the gallery – which is understandable given the usual individual ticket price is $25 at least.

On this visit we arrived about 11.15 (between the morning tea time and lunch) to find ample parking available – with the cafe busy as usual. T

The gallery was very quiet with the main galleries in change-over for the next major exhibition (see link below). therefore the entry price was reduced to $16 each.

The Albert Tucker Grotesques was the main exhibition. Heidi holds the major archive of Tucker’s works and over time has staged themed shows taken from the large collection of works.

This ‘Grotesques’ selection  is worth seeing – but you could imagine that not too many of these would have sold in their day. Would you really want this staring at you in your dining room?

Nevertheless, definitely good to see.

————————–

In the Heidi house museum there was a selection of works by photographer Michael Lawrence who had made portraits of artists – with a several new ones being commissioned for this exhibition.

The Heidi house is always good to wander through – especially as the entry is included in the main ticket price you have already paid for the main gallery exhibitions.

Here’s a couple of my photographs of two artist’s works.

The other aspect of Heidi is their gardens and sculpture park.

I suspect most people heading for their cafe lunch walk past this early work by Anish Kapoor without realising its importance.

Two opportunist photographs:

below is a quiet corner on the way into the Heidi house.

and a view out from a window in the house, through one of their blinds. It looks as though there had been an accident with a wall partly demolished.
