Suzanne Vega

Review: Music

Suzanne Vega: Tales from the Realm of the Queen of Pentacles. 2014

If you are one of the many who enjoyed Suzanne Vega’s words and music, then I can almost guarantee that you will love this new album. This new album is Suzanne Vega at her best.

Her humour is there as is her wonderful grasp of story telling and wisdom of dealing with some of the big life issues – although she has layered some of this with a little folklore approach.

The musical styles vary a little, and her selected musicians do a great job. Sadly she really wanted late and great Lou Reed to help out, but he was too sick when she approached him. Although Suzanne does tell the story that Lou’s dog did mangle her sun glasses during the visit.

Suzanne Vega also did a few acoustic numbers on the NPR Tiny Desk Concert – it is very entertaining. Recommended you take the time to watch.

and.. if you were interested in buying some of her former music, may I strongly urge you to look at any or all of a recent four disc set that Suzanne put together recently under her own label.  In previous years, she has had a less than unsatisfactory relationship with some label companies, and so she recorded many of her songs under own label and across four themed albums. This means all royalties go to her not the previous record companies. The albums are titled – Close up Vols 1 – 4. They are available as downloads –  Click here.

My recommendation for the new album will make sense if you stop what you are doing and listen to the words as well as the tunes. It is worth it.
