Deutscher Hackett auction visits

visual arts exhibitions

Another post about visits to auction houses to see visual arts exhibition – being four day events before the auction. There’s usually a mix of artworks – some wonderful to some ordinary.

These auction pre-sale previews are opportunities to see works that in most cases will go into private hands and most likely not be seen again by the general public.

The pictures below are from two previews, one in September and another (on right now as I write) in mid October.  Names artists included in the last two auctions at this auction house included: Clarice Beckett, Rupert Bunny, Max Meldrum, Inge King, Fred Williams, Robert Jacks, Rick Amor, Ray Crooks, Frederick MCubbin, Grace Cossington Smith, Cressida Campbell, Brett Whiteley, Bronwyn Oliver, Rosalie Gascoigne,  Tony Tuckson, Margaret Preston and a lot more.

the auction in August was the result os a bunch of works being deaccessioned by the McClelland Gallery, located at the southern edge of Melbourne. This raised a few questions given this was about a public collection selling off established parts of its collection to raise funds for contemporary works.

The second preview (below)  in October was a more modest showing with a few delights to be seen. All good fun experiences.

On both occasions after we had seen the previews  we wandered along to the Pahran Markets to mainly wander about and admire the selections of food on offer.

We noted that the markets were fairly quiet considering it was lunch time – on a Thursday both times.

An opportune photograph:

On the way out of the markets I noticed this thing below in a vacant stall and wondered if I had put a label on it whether it could have been taken for an artwork.

now to watch out for more auction house previews.
