winter in Melbourne
One of the joys of winter in Melbourne, is to walk along the Darebin Creek Trail; which is apparently about 25 kms long. On this day we walked along a section close to home.
The trail meanders through the north suburbs. It is a magnificent grren corridor through suburbs of housing and the occasional light industrial areas.
As you wander along you are surrounded by trees, bird song and the sounds of the creek – which on this day was flowing forcefully.
Somewhere in Melbourne’s past, someone foresaw what a benefit it would be to leave this corridor green and to insert the trail for people to use. I have seen such creek corridors in other cities concreted over to become drains and the waterway as a habitat disappear.
This is a great community asset. We enjoyed a peaceful walk for about an hour or so.
However, we were reminded that there are those who ride their bicycles at spped as if there was an international race . Many of them were ignoring the need to warn pedestrians ahead of their approach by ringing their bell.
I would imagine that in peek hours, this otherwise peaceful path could be potentially a dangerous place to be.
