World of Books

Victoria State Library Exhibition

There are several reasons to go to the State Library of Victoria. It is a great place for research – and – they have very engaging exhibitions. One of their current exhibitions is high up in the dome (4th floor). This one is World of Books.

To quote from the library’s own online introduction: Chart the rise and restyling of the beloved book in this one-of-a-kind exhibition on the history of book design, production and illustration from the Middle Ages to today.

World of the Book features more than 300 rare, remarkable, historically significant items from the State Collection, uncovering the stories they tell and celebrating the unique place books have in our hearts and minds. This year’s themes explore: books and ideas, books and imagination, art and nature, artists and natural history, artists and books.

We were there earlier in the year and returned to see the latest version of the exhibition – meaning it has changed quite a bit since we saw it first.

Be warned, the place can get a little crowded with tourists taking their selfies with the dome and reading room behind them. They tend not to stop for long – with very few taking the time to look at the exhibition.

This exhibition is highly recommended.
