Treasures of the Viking Age: The Galloway Hoard

Museum Victoria special exhibition

Having an interest in archeology and having watched many programs such as Time Team, those with Professor Alice Roberts including Digging For Britain – the arrival of The Galloway Hoard into Australia definitely put a museum visit on the list of things to do before Christmas this year.

The objects are absolutely fascinating! If this is your topic, and you are in Melbourne, then you probably should go. But

The exhibition is underwhelming! Lots of space, lots of information panels and a few large videos talking to you – with these small objects in cases scattered through these large rooms. More comments below

A couple of the objects are 3-D replicas. This did not bother me; in fact I was impressed by how great they looked. Is this the future for valuable museum and art objects that are too fragile to travel and sending such stuff around the world is risky and very expensive.

It was an expensive visit – about $48 for both of us (you buy a museum ticket and the exhibition ticket) plus parking. We stayed about 30 minutes.

Fascinating objects – great to see them close up – but overall it was not something I would recommend you travel interstate forĀ  – and then only if you are very keen.

and so we took ourselves over to a cafe in Carlton for lunch – click here – which was an absolute find!
