early 20th C Australian woman artist
Following visits to auctions and subsequent research, we have been looking into the lives and works of a couple of Australian early 20th century painters. One artist that caught our eye was Mary Meyer – who had six works up for sale at Joel’s Women Artists auction here in Melbourne in September 2024.
There was little available online about Mary Meyer. There are several good books, mostly published several decades ago, that have included information about Mary and her works.
All this led to us doing research to see what we could put together on this early 20th century artist. Actually she overlaps from the late 19th century and keeps working late into her life – dying aged 97 in 1975.
For the two of us with histories in photography, especially Gael with her long professional curatorial career in photography, this has been a departure in our interests. Good fun to be onto this new topic!
Here’s a link to two pages on Mary Meyer.
